Nestled between the mountains of Bhutan and the flat Himalayan plains you will find Snowview Tea Garden. This garden has been cultivating tea since 1870, seventeen years before SD Bell founded his Tea and Coffee firm! It gets its name from the snowcapped Himalayan Mountain range which can be seen from the estate on a clear day.
Snowview is surrounded by three forest reserves (Gorumara, Jaldakah, and Chapramari), and the river Moortee runs along the lower border of the tea garden. This garden is considered a bio diversity hotspot with animals such as elephant, bison, leopards, rhinos, wild deer, and wild boar can be spotted occasionally when they venture out of the surrounding forests.
Snowview also falls under the migratory path of the elephants which travel across the estate regularly between the forests in order to drink and bathe in the Moortee river. The garden has recently partnered with The Wildlife Enterprise, which is an independent organisation striving to protect elephant populations. In 2020 Snowview became the first tea garden in Darjeeling to be awarded with Elephant Friendly Tea Garden certification.
Snowview is at an elevation of 1,000 metres, and covers 600 hectares. The tea garden supports 700 workers and their families.
This tea has a large green leaf, with silver tips. The liquor is bright orange in colour, the flavour is light and smooth with hints of citrus. Use freshly drawn boiled water that has cooled for 2 minutes and brew for 3-5 minutes, depending on personal taste.
